As it was the Sunday afternoon before Christmas, LUPEC decided that it was our civic duty to provide hangover-cure drinks. Monday found a recipe for Snappy Bloody Marys that is completely in keeping with LUPEC's women's history mission. Also, the very popular and eggnog-like Mae West was deemed suitable for the holiday. Monday, Brandy, and Whiskey Daisy set up a LUPEC table near the door and got the ingredients ready. Sapphi, in her tapshoes, had band business to attend to and rightfully attended to it. Sitting ready at their stations, Whiskey, Brandy and Monday plotted a strategy; the raw egg yolk in the Mae West would freak people out. The Snappy Bloody Mary would be much more popular. Brandy would only separate a few eggs so as not to waste them. People started showing up carrying their complimentary beerand LUPEC went in for the hard sell. Not everyone took the bait but those that did chose The Mae West! Daisy had to make an eggrun to the Giant Eagle down the street and even that did not meet the need. Brandy had stationed herself at the Mae West end of the table and Monday watched helplessly as she made drink after drink after drink. Monday's celery started to wilt--it was just like highschool: EVERYONE LIKED BRANDY BETTER! Well, that's not really true and not what Monday was thinking but she did experience shaker envy. The Hi Frequencies played a crisp, jangley set of sweet surf rock and their fans were loud and supportive. Several Christmas songs were played much like that great Ventures Christmas album--just as fun and just as good. The eggs had finally run out and Monday stepped up to the plate. She quickly discovered that exact measurements are an impediment to the mass production of drinks. The Snappy Bloody Marys went fast and furious and the ingredients held out for most of the show. The Mofones took the stage with an homage to The Charlie Brown Christmas Special and proceeded to rip it up with a Buddhistcentric medley of "Proud Mary/Jingle Bells." They played a tight set of their home-spun, surrealistic, better-than-Bongwater boy-girl harmony originals and ended the show with an actual Audience Participation Sing Along to "Do They Know its Christmas." Showmanship-pure showmanship. LUPEC would like to thank Suz and Tim, the Hi-Frequencies and The Mofones for letting us spread a little Holiday Cheer. Fa la la la la. La, la, la, la. |
